The 5th edition of the Global Renewable Energy Forum (GREF) is organized by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Bonn Office in cooperation with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and REN21 – the Renewable Energy Network for the 21st Century.

GREF 2021 takes place as a hybrid conference on September 16, 2021, from 9:00-13:15 hrs (CEST).

More and more countries and companies commit to net zero-emission strategies, and roughly 73% of global CO2 emissions are subject to specific net-zero targets. Renewables continue to increase and reported a record year in 2020. Yet, to move toward a net zero-emission pathway, annual additions of wind and solar capacity must increase four-fold by 2030, making the 2020s a decisive decade. Limiting temperature increase to 1.5°C by mid-century requires an energy transition based on renewable energy sources and energy-efficient technologies.

Cities play a crucial role in achieving the energy transition not only in the power sector but also in end-use sectors lagging in the uptake of renewables that constitute serious obstacles to attaining net zero-emission targets. Particularly heating has not seen much addition of renewables in recent years.

Against this backdrop, GREF 2021 focuses on net zero-emission pathways of the public and private sectors and the role of cities in the energy transition, with a particular focus on buildings. It demonstrates ways to achieve net zero emissions by 2050 and particularly focuses on how to implement ambitious 2030 targets.

The partners of the conference are ICLEI, International Geothermal Association (IGA), Eurosolar, UNIDO ITPO Germany, World Wind Energy Association (WWEA), Germanwatch, the EnergyAgency.NRW, and the German Technical and Scientific Association for Gas and Water (DVGW).

We are looking forward to the 8th Geothermal Congress for Latin America & the Caribbean (GEOLAC 2021) – a virtual event organized by New Energy and co-hosted with the Inter-American Development Bank, ESMAP and the World Bank. It takes place on September 8-10, 2021 and we would be happy to see you there!

The IGA sponsored session “Why geothermal energy is the game changer for green hydrogen production” include many panelists. Among them – Marit Brommer, Executive Director of the IGA. In the session participants will hold a multi-part conversation about the potential for geothermal produced hydrogen. Experts will discuss what needs to be done to turn ideas into action.

The second part of this discussion will take place at the World Geothermal Congress on October 24-27th in Iceland.

IGA members can register with 25% discount: Join us at GEOLAC!

The countries of Latin America are endowed with excellent geothermal resources. In Central America, these resources have been utilised mainly to generate electricity in Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. In addition, there exists geothermal potential in Belize, Dominican Republic and Panama. In South America, geothermal resources are found in Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. Chile has a utility-scale geothermal power plants, while Colombia has recently opened a small unit generating geothermal power for self-use.

In addition, geothermal energy can be used for multiple applications to support the realisation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), particularly SDG 7. For instance, the application of geothermal heat in the end-use sectors can favour the agri-food value sector, space heating and cooling in buildings, domestic hot water supply, among other industrial applications. These examples present an evident nexus between geothermal energy and the SDGs in areas such as food security and nutrition, climate action, sustainable cities and communities, among others.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH through the Programme on Geothermal Heat Utilization for Industrial Processes in the SICA member countries (GEO II) co-organised a webinar on geothermal direct use in Latin America, with a focus on direct uses applications in the agri-food, industrial and urban sectors. The webinar will be held in Spanish.

The event will take place on Wednesday, 11 August at 19:00 GST (Abu Dhabi time).

Pivot is a decade-long conference series focused on engaging oil and gas professionals in geothermal exploration and development. This year’s Pivot2021 – Geothermal Reimagined, to take place virtually July 19-23, will feature more than 165 speakers across 35 spirited sessions, with IGA members featured across a variety of sessions and topics. The agenda is exciting, with a diverse group of speakers across multiple disciplines and industries, and appearances by Sir Richard Branson, Chris Anderson and Daniel Yergin. This year, the IGA partnered with Pivot2021 to host a variety of sessions at Pivot2021, including sessions exploring offshore geothermal energy, geothermal in developing nations, and geothermal’s social license, to name a few. Pivot2021 is free to attend, but registration is required. The conference will be translated live into ten languages, and all are welcome to attend globally.
We invite you to register and explore the virtual event page here: If you’ve already registered, you can use your registered email address to log-in. You will use this same sign-in process to access the conference live the week of the event. (PRESS RELEASE, Berlin, 9th of June 2021) Dr. Erwin Knapek, President of the German Geothermal Association, on the partnership: “In order to strengthen the country community of Germany, Austria and Switzerland, we recently extended the editorial responsibilities of our magazine Geothermal Energy to the geothermal associations of Switzerland and Austria. Consequently, it was also obvious for us to show this newly strengthened cooperation at this year’s Geothermal Congress.” As the congress is planned again on location in the City of Essen this year, joint and independent workshops of the partner countries are also to be held there.

“We are looking forward to the first-time cooperation of the geothermal associations in the DACH region for the Geothermal Congress and are convinced that increased joint communication in the German-speaking region in the future will improve the visibility and relevance of geothermal energy to decision-makers,” said Dr. Peter Seifert, chairman of the Geothermal Association of Austria.

The president of Geothermie-Schweiz, Nathalie Andenmatten Berthoud, also knows the value of international cooperation: “It makes it possible to benefit from each other’s expertise, improve common practices, and generally make better use of the potential of geothermal energy in the countries. With this in mind, Geothermal Switzerland has already entered into a partnership with the French association in 2019. I am very pleased that we are now intensifying this exchange in the German-speaking region as well.”

The call for papers is currently running until 30th of June and invites interested parties to submit recent scientific results.

The congress will take place from November 30 to December 2, 2021 at the Haus der Technik in the City of Essen, North Rhine-Westphalia.
