The organizing committee of European Geothermal PhD Days (EGPD)-2020 is excited to announce the 11th EGPD, which is going to be held for the first time in Turkey, with the hospitability of Pamukkale University in Denizli, Western Turkey. The event will take place on 24th to 26th of February 2020 at the Geothermal Application and Research Center of the Pamukkale University.

The EGPD 2020 offers a unique chance to the participants to see the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Hierapolis-Pamukkale’ and an engineering excellence-awarded-geothermal power plant owned by Zorlu Energy.

The EGPD as a European (but not only!) event has proven its importance in a decade following its establishment. The three-day event traditionally starts with the oral presentations of keynote speakers, introductions of each participant with two to three minutes of talk and poster sessions. It continues with an off-campus excursion to a geothermal energy related site on the last day.

All participants must submit an abstract and present their projects as posters during the conference. You are welcome to register and submit the abstracts for your posters through the form here: http://www.pau.edu.tr/egpd2020/en.

If you have any questions or need any assistance, you can contact the EGPD team at egpd2020@pau.edu.tr.

In May 2020, the GFZ will host the Cermak7 conference:

7th International Meeting on Heat Flow and the Geothermal Field

The meeting, which is organized under the auspices of the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC: ihfc-iugg.org) both as conference and workshop, provides a unique opportunity for researchers, students and industry experts to discuss recent results and developments in heat-flow determination and interpretation, experimental petrophysics, geothermal exploration and lithosphere studies.

On behalf of the local organization committee and the International Heat Flow Commission (IHFC), we are pleased to invite you to the Cermak7 conference.

The registration is open now and limited to 70 participants. You are cordially invited to register and to submit abstracts.

Please check the website:
http://cermak7.ihfc-iugg.org
for detailed information.

Surrounded by forests and lakes and rich in historical castles and cultural attractions, Potsdam is looking forward to welcoming you to the Cermak7 meeting in May 2020!

On behalf of the local organization committee,
Sven Fuchs, Ben Norden, Andrea Förster, Sascha Brune, Angela Spalek, Birgit Schöbel

Questions to: cermak7@gfz-potsdam.de

The successful appointee will be expected to undertake the following:

  • Develop a broad ensemble of static models of fractured basement geothermal reservoir (DFN, Faults) using a range of modelling/geostatistical tools
  • Develop thermal simulation/flow models of the reservoirs to forecast reservoir productivity
  • Develop estimates of uncertainty in the predicted reservoir response and optimise development strategies robustly for SW Granite geothermal resources.
  • Model where feasible the impact of key hazards such as scaling and induced seismicity under uncertainty
  • Present research results at conferences and internal project meetings
  • Publish peer-reviewed and conference papers

The final conference of GEMex will serve as a platform to present and discuss results from the projects and to learn about other researches and projects related to the topics of superhot geothermal sources (SHGS) and hot EGS. Contributions are encouraged and welcome addressing any of the aspects associated with the investigation, development and/or exploitation of such geothermal resources in any part of the world.

Event admission is free of charge. For registration to the GEMex Final Conference, please register online until January 24, 2020.

Dates

  • 1st of November 2019 Conference registration and abstract submission open

Calling All Geothermal Musicians And Music Lovers: Prepare yourselves for the WING Battle of the Bands at WGC 2020

WING members Atli Björn Þorbjörnsson and Ann Robertson-Tait invite you to show off your musical talents at the WING Battle of the Bands, which will be held at on Thursday evening (30 April 2020) in Reykjavik.  We know that there are many geothermal people who are into music and like to perform.  Therefore, we humbly request that you

PREPARE FOR BATTLE IN REYKJAVIK!

Because we know it’s difficult to travel with lots of music gear, Atli came up with some great ideas to simplify the process and maximize participation.  Atli and his band Black Box will organize and provide the following to make it easier for you to join the fun:

  • A great venue for this momentous event (Atli is evaluating 3 options at the moment)
  • Amplifiers for guitars, keyboards etc.
  • Instruments that you can “borrow” (temporarily), including guitars, basses, keyboards and drums
  • Mic stands and microphones
  • Black Box, which will be the “house band” for this event
  • Volunteering all or part of Black Box to support your performance – for example:
    • If you are a singer, just bring yourself and your mic (or use one of Atli’s)
    • If you have some instruments but not all, Black Box can fill the gaps
    • If you just play one instrument, you can sub yourself into Black Box

Let’s maximize the number of people and bands that get up on stage and ROCK THE HOUSE! There is no requirement to ONLY play rock music – we welcome all musical styles – just DO YOUR THING, whatever it is!

Here are your next steps:

  • Rehearse – Either on your own or together with your musical friends/band members, get some tunes together and decide what you’d like to perform.
  • Ask for what you need – Don’t be shy – tell Atli what support you need (gear, musicians, etc.) and what songs you’d like to play so Black Box can be ready for your performance.
  • Spread the word – We are expecting maximum fun at this event, so the more the merrier!
  • Prepare to dance – We are certain that you will want to kick up your heels after 4 days of technical sessions and networking, so bring your dancing shoes!
  • Contact us today – We are here to answer your questions: atli@axlaw.is | ann1@slb.com

GET READY FOR A FANTASTIC SHOWAT THE WING BATTLE OF THE BANDS!

Photo Title: Geothermal unknown magic
Place: Tsenkher, Mongolia

On the 1860 meters above sea, based in the old volcanoes structure a hot geothermal spring flows all year long with unsalted, highly mineralised waters of 86°C.Throughout a system of primitive pipelines the hot geothermal water powers the local households, warms the animals shelters in the harsh Mongolian winter and is used for simple greenhousing. Thanks to this hot spring the tourism sector emerged and a geothermal spa and a tourist yurts camp is constructed. The geothermal resource is an economic leverage to this small, rural community in the middle of Mongolia. Tsenkher has no paved road access thus, the geothermal spring is the main the source of energy and thereby the source of community life. Moreover, the geothermal spring is given a magical significance by the locals and village shamans perform their prayers at the source estuary…
