August 2022
Dear friends,
Here we are again! In case you did not subscribe to our mailing list yet, we inform you in August’s review on our activities globally and give you a sneak preview on what’s on the agenda.
Enjoy!
Your IGA Team
In June the IGA visited their new corporate member Steps Energy in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Several meetings were held to scope out how Geothermal resources in Saudi Arabia can be utilized to help deliver energy targets of the Saudi Vision 2030. A site visit was conducted in the Hot Spring area of Al-Lith, where boiling water is reaching the surface water. A small development project is utilizing the hot springs for recreational purposes. Several geological provinces have been mapped as potential geothermal resource areas.
Steps Energy President, Mr Hani Taibah, is committed to set up a large programme focused on geothermal resource assessments, technical requirements for the drilling sites, and field development plans including a thorough assessment of the powerplant engineering specifications.
The Kenyan Geothermal Association held its annual event in July in Nairobi with adjacent field visits to the Olkaria and Menengai Geothermal projects. Kenya is leading the geothermal development in East Africa and KenGen and GDC are committed to help build capacity in neighbouring countries Djibouti, Tanzania, Uganda, and Rwanda.
The IGA was present with four delegates and held several talks on geothermal direct use, were part of panel sessions on the role of oil and gas in the geothermal sector and were part of the overall organisation of this excellent event. We created some videos on site from the conference and field trip – these can be watched here:
Indonesia is heading up the G20 this year and is convening in Bali in November 2022 the G20 Summit. In the runup to the G20 summit, the IGA and partners have been involved in several webinars and onsite meetings to help boost geothermal as part of the energy transition goals and objectives. During the last meeting in Bali our Vice President Pri Utami was present and participated in the onsite meetings jointly with key players such as Pertamina.
The Indonesian Geothermal Association is conducting its annual flagship event the IIGCE from 14-16 September in Jakarta. That will be an excellent opportunity for further networking, engaging and jointly boosting the geothermal development in Indonesia.
Thank you Pri for representing us in the region!
The state of Queensland in Australia has become the first jurisdiction in the world to mandate the United Nations Framework Classification (UNFC) Geothermal Specifications for classifying and reporting geothermal energy resources.
The International Geothermal Association (IGA) is responsible for developing and maintaining documents relating to the application of UNFC to geothermal energy via a memorandum of understanding signed with the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe in 2014. The first ‘UNFC Geothermal Specifications’ were launched in 2016. Since then, the IGA has worked with IRENA, the World Bank, national geothermal energy associations, and other partners to raise awareness of the framework.
The Australian Geothermal Association (AGA) provided advice to the Queensland Government as part of a scheduled revision of the Queensland Geothermal Regulations earlier in 2022, including adoption of the UNFC Geothermal Specifications. The recommendation was accepted and the revised Regulations were enacted into state law on 18 August to take effect from 1 September. AGA President, Mark Ballesteros, commented that ,”The AGA is very pleased and proud to have played a key role in the world’s first adoption of the UNFC Geothermal Specifications by Queensland. This represents a significant step forward in the adoption of a globally consistent resource reporting standard, and we hope it provides other jurisdictions with the confidence to also adopt UNFC for harmonised reporting of geothermal energy alongside other natural resources.”
You never stop learning, so over the past weeks we attended several events and workshops to furthermore make our association fit for future.
The ICCA Venues International Business Workshop on 12-14 May 2022 was a great opportunity to get a well-informed overview of what offers are available on the market from ICCA members and to exchange knowledge best practices with other associations and meeting suppliers. This gave us valuable insights for the organization of IGA’s World Geothermal Congress 2026 and 2029.
From 27-28 June 2022 it was a pleasure joining other associations and destination partners for the Geneva International Association Forum (GIAF) to enable peer-to-peer exchange, to share best practices and to design joint initiatives to tackle common challenges. Connecting, sharing and learning is crucial, and that was noticeable throughout the sessions (see photo) when we discussed Leadership, Communication, Diversity, Hybrid Events, Membership, Event Business Models, Digital Marketing, and many topics more.
Last, but not least our Familiarization Trip for international associations to Graz, Austria from 28-30 July 2022 showed us the beauty of the region and the venues of Graz. We had interesting and fruitful conversations with potential congress organizers, and it was another great knowledge exchange with other associations.
It was wonderful participating in these events. We came as strangers and left as friends.
NEW DATE: 11-12 October 2022 | Larderello, Tuscany, Italy
Learn from the icon of geothermal energy generation in Larderello, Tuscany! We are beyond excited to work with ENEL Green Power to jointly organise an international geothermal workshop.
This is a 2 day programme all around geothermal sustainability with government representatives, industry leadership and the finance community.
We have received more than 1600 abstracts from our international community expressing their interest to present at the World Geothermal Congress 2023 scheduled 17-21 April in Beijing, China. The overwhelming response to join us in Beijing where we will be hosted by Sinopec and Arctic Green Energy Corporation is simply fantastic.
We have a strong Technical Committee in place and thank all our reviewers who have done an outstanding job so far. Full papers are due end of September.
A first schedule of events including details on sponsorship, exhibitions and short courses is expected to be online from end of August 2022 onwards – the signs are so far on green and we look forward to our event in the vibrant city of Beijing.
