Dear friends,
Here we are again! In case you did not subscribe to our mailing list yet, we inform you in September’s review on our activities globally and give you a sneak preview on what’s on the agenda.
Enjoy!
Your IGA Team
Due to ongoing uncertainty regarding scheduling and organising a global event under the zero-Covid policy in China, the International Geothermal Association (IGA) and the National Geothermal Energy Center of China (CNGEC) are announcing that the World Geothermal Congress 2023 is postponed to a later date in October 2023. The exact timing of the event is to be announced shortly.
The World Geothermal Congress (WGC) is the premier global geothermal event for the sharing of knowledge and innovations from around the world, bringing together leaders of industry, academia, governments, NGO’s and communities to collaborate and provide thoughtful solutions for a sustainable world.
The IGA and CNGEC truly believe this decision is the best possible path forward that will lead to a globally successful event for our community. Further information on the event such as sponsorships, exhibitor packages and registration details will be coming online in October 2022. All details will be posted on www.wgc2023.com.
The deadline for paper submissions to the technical programme is extended with three months to effectively 31 December 2022.
We trust that this decision will bring a clear and final direction for all stakeholders’ business, logistics and scientific planning. Thank you for your understanding and for your continued support.
11-12 October 2022 | Larderello, Tuscany, Italy
Learn from the icon of geothermal energy generation in Larderello, Tuscany! We are beyond excited to work with ENEL Green Power to jointly organise an international geothermal workshop.
This is a 2 day programme on 11 and 12 October 2022 all around geothermal sustainability with government representatives, industry leadership and the finance community.
The list of speakers includes: Luigi La Pegna (ENEL), Emanuele Pingaro (Turboden), Carlo Doglioni (INGV), Bruno Della Vedova (UGI), Monia Procesi (INGV), Alessandro Lenzi (ENEL), Bjarni Bjarnason (Orkuveita Reykjavikur), Khalid Bankher (Saudi Geological Survey), Mike Karanja (Kenyan Geothermal Association), Álvaro Arnáiz Giménez-Coral (Repsol), Vincent Padeilles (Vulcan Energy), Adele Manzella (CNR, IGA), Fausto Batini (ETIP_DG)
The IGA is continuing the awareness raising for the Geothermal Sustainability Assessment Protocol. The Protocol can be downloaded here https://www.lovegeothermal.org/portfolio-item/geothermal-sustainability-assessment-protocol-gsap/ and is now also available in Spanish.
Various discussions have been held in Kenya, Indonesia, and Costa Rica with the operators of geothermal assets and valuable feedback have been received. The IGA and partners are currently drafting a work programme on deploying a pilot to assess and evaluate the mechanisms of the protocol to further the understanding of its applicability amongst our stakeholders. Based on conversations with the financiers of geothermal projects, the IGA concludes that many different approaches and methods exist globally towards measuring and assessing sustainability criteria for geothermal energy. Whilst this is understandable the IGA also concludes that a more coherent and globally accepted framework of geothermal sustainability is crucial to attract more capital towards geothermal development.
The IGA is therefore setting up a Sustainability Workstream with global partners and we invite interested parties or individuals to submit your interest to iga@lovegeothermal.org. This topic is also discussed at our Accelerating Geothermal Event in Larderello, Italy, with ENEL Green Power as the key host and sponsor of the event.
Minister Arifin Tasrif presented the roadmap of Indonesia to install a further 3300MWe in Indonesia this decade at the IIGCE in Jakarta. The energy companies Pertamina, Star Energy, KS Orka and Supreme Energy are ready to deliver on that target. Discussions are on-going with the Government on electricity prices and potential feed-in tariffs to mobilise capital into geothermal development. Hot topics at the conference were green hydrogen production in Papua New Guinea, advancing the business model of geothermal projects through secondary products such as lithium and silica extraction and using geothermal heat directly in the agricultural space.
The conference was attended by more than 50 companies at the exhibition floor and saw about 500 participants over the two days engaging in scientific talks, high-level round tables and award-winning ceremonies. The IGA supported by moderating two panels onsite and was engaged in several meetings with the geothermal sector to scope out international work programmes to help deliver on the target of installing more MW in Indonesia.
The 2nd high-level meeting of the Global Geothermal Alliance was held in El Salvador on 29 Sept – 1 October, including a site visit to LaGeo’s Berlín Geothermal Power Plant.
The IGA was proud partner to the event organised by the International Renewable Energy Agency and co-hosted a fireside chat with Minister Jone Usamate of Fiji as part of the Small Island Development States dialogues, organised side events on the big five opportunities of geothermal energy and coordinated several interventions, panel discussions and a scene-setting presentation on the outlook of geothermal energy globally.
The IGA Delegation consisted of Sam Abraham, Joseph Ireland, Sulamith Kastl and Jackson Grimes who spoke to the points of capacity-building, education, social impact and technology transfer. Christiaan Gischler of the Inter-American Development Bank spoke to the point of building a geothermal to green hydrogen alliance to position the ‘heat beneath our feet’ as a strong partner in the upcoming hydrogen economy.
The IGA concluded the three days with two milestone proposed agreements: a cooperation agreement with El Salvador´s Geothermal Centre of Excellence to enable and facilitate international geothermal capacity building and a Caribbean-Pacific Agreement to coordinate a geothermal implementation plan on small-islands. Exciting times ahead of us!
The IGA is looking for a partnership and requesting proposals to prepare and deliver the organisation of the World Geothermal Congress 2026 (WGC2026).
You can download the Request for Proposals on our website.
Due to the postponement of the WGC2023 to October, we extend the closing time for proposals until 31 January 2023.
The World Geothermal Congress is the IGA´s flagship event and is scheduled every three years. The event attracts more than 2500 participants, has a strong scientific component and is considered the most important event for sponsors and exhibitors to demonstrate their brands, companies and services they can provide in the geothermal energy space. The social programme entails cultural exchanges, welcome reception and a conference gala diner and a crucial element of any WGC are the field trips to experience geothermal together and learn from the countries best practices.
