IGA Board votes for China to be the host of the World Geothermal Congress 2023

The International Geothermal Association is pleased to announce that China will be the host of the World Geothermal Congress 2023.

The IGA Board has voted for China after careful evaluation of three bid books coming from China, Italy and Russia. The voting was done after presentations to the Board in Auckland, New Zealand on November 28, 2019. The Board sincerely thanks all three candidates for their commitment and interest in hosting the next World Geothermal Congress and appreciated the presentations of the bid book whilst convening in Auckland for Board meeting #71.

“The IGA is grateful for the great interest shown to host the World Geothermal Congress 2023 and congratulates China for its winning bid. With its commitment to utilise geothermal energy in its efforts on making cities smoke-free, China has seen an incredible growth in geothermal district heating capacity. With that it serves as a great example and showcase on the role of geothermal energy beyond electricity in direct use of geothermal resources for heating, both for businesses, residences and industrial use. We are looking forward to work with our Chinese counterparts on the 2023 World Geothermal Congress.”, so Alexander Richter, President of the IGA.

The IGA congratulates China and is aiming to finalise the contractual agreement between IGA and Host in the first Quarter of 2020. The signing ceremony between IGA and China will be organised at WGC2020 in Reykjavik, Iceland.

IGA presenting latest GSS-VET progress at the Geothermiekongress in Munich

The availability of qualified personal is a bottleneck for the expansion of shallow geothermal energy in many countries. Specific knowledge for heating installers as well as for drilling staff or planners and designers. On November 19th, the training course approaches of the projects geo2spain, GSS-VET, Geozert and GeoTrainet have been presented at the Geothermiekongress Munich.

In “Vocational Education and Training in Europe: The GSS-VET Project” our Technical Director Gregor Rumberg reported about the latest project results, the implementation of innovative teaching methods, experiences from the international collaboration and a possible utilization on the German market.

The GSS-VET project combines and promotes Geothermal and Solar Skills in Vocational Education and Training. The training content is focused on technical skills, but also on transversal ones, including entrepreneurship, ICT, interdisciplinary skills and ability to work effectively with people from other disciplines. 40 trainers and 200 workers will directly be trained during the project’s lifetime, and thanks to the involvement of VET providers, sectorial organizations (including an EU umbrella), regional authorities and other associated partners, 2,500 workers will be trained by 2025. The workshop presents the training course approaches of the projects geo2spain, GSS-VET, Geozert and GeoTrainet. In a second part the participants are invited to an open discussion.

On the 1860 meters above sea, based in the old volcanoes structure a hot geothermal spring flows all year long with unsalted, highly mineralised waters of 86°C.Throughout a system of primitive pipelines the hot geothermal water powers the local households, warms the animals shelters in the harsh Mongolian winter and is used for simple greenhousing. Thanks to this hot spring the tourism sector emerged and a geothermal spa and a tourist yurts camp is constructed. The geothermal resource is an economic leverage to this small, rural community in the middle of Mongolia. Tsenkher has no paved road access thus, the geothermal spring is the main the source of energy and thereby the source of community life.Moreover, the geothermal spring is given a magical significance by the locals and village shamans perform their prayers at the source estuary…

The International Geothermal Association (IGA) announces ground-breaking results of the elections to its Board of Directors 2020-2023

The elections to the Board of Directors of the International Geothermal Association (IGA) for the 2020-2023 period have concluded and results are in. For an international organisation like the IGA, the participation of its membership, the national geothermal associations, industrial and individual members in elections is crucial to provide the basis for the representation of our diverse industry. We are therefore glad to have reached strong engagement by membership and participation in the elections.

We are particularly proud of the wide and diverse field of 50 candidates, who stood for elections to be represented on the board of IGA effective 1 May 2020. We congratulate all the elected individuals and are looking forward working with you in preparation of your term and beyond. While only 25 of those extremely qualified candidates were voted in the board, we hope to be able to build on the energy and dedication for geothermal of all the candidates that were not elected. We hope to be able to bind them into our work on helping push geothermal development worldwide.

Any industry lives of the diversity of its players and individuals, the representation in organisations like ours needs to reflect that. So, as part of wider changes to the IGA, its operations and governance, our emphasis going into the elections was to provide better diversity in the representation of the wider geothermal community. Setting a target of 50% female representation on the board, we achieved more than that. But diversity goes beyond gender, and we are also proud to have a wide diversity when it comes to geographic and industry segment representation. We see a strong representation from the Asia-Pacific and European region and are excited to have a good representation from Latin American and East Africa. 

“Targeting an equal share of men and women, we now see a fundamental shift and a strong representation of a highly talented group of women. I am personally very proud seeing these results, which confirm my trust on the great power of community. I strongly hope that we are able to utilise this dynamic for the wider goal of IGA giving geothermal energy a more diverse and stronger voice and helping promote what we as an industry have to offer in the global energy and heat transition. I am convinced that this great new board is a fantastic group of strong individuals continuing the work of our current and previous boards.”

“Coming closer to the World Geothermal Congress 2020 to take place April 27 to May 1, 2020 in Reykjavik, Iceland, we see a stronger role of the IGA in the context of discussions on the global energy transition and the role it has to offer. As part of organisational and legal changes to our by-laws, the new board has room to co-opt up to five additional board members to provide for better diversity in terms of gender, geography and competency. Details on the process are currently being worked on and will be shared in due course. 

We hope to engage with all the candidates that stood for elections on how we can utilise the momentum on helping our work at IGA. 

Please join us in congratulating the new board of IGA to start its work on 1 May 2020. We are looking very much forward to see the global geothermal energy community meet at the World Geothermal Congress 2020 in Reykjavik, Iceland.
